What is your hobby?

Playing pickleball

How did you get started with this hobby?

I started just before the pandemic as a way to get exercise and to try something new. There are courts near my home, so it was convenient for me to go and play. I was hesitant at first but got comfortable quickly by learning the rules of the game with the help of others.

Tell us what you love about your hobby.

The strategy when playing against really good players. The key to getting the point is where to hit the ball and how hard. Also, it’s played with a partner, so it’s important to know where they are at on the court so you can work in synergy to be in a good position. There are many different skill levels of players, so I also enjoy playing with various other people. There is quite a large swath of people who play, from young to very old, all bring different skill sets to the court.

What types of things/equipment have you spent money on for your hobby?

All that is really needed is a pickleball paddle, a ball, and three other people to play with. There are different balls for outdoor use as opposed to indoors. I believe the type of shoes you wear is important so that you don’t slide on the court and have adequate support.

What are some of your favorite places to shop for your hobby?

I have never physically visited a store that is geared towards pickleball accessories. It has been easy and convenient to shop online as I’ve gotten everything I’ve needed from Amazon.

How much money have you invested into this? How much would a beginner have to invest to get started?

About $200 total. My initial paddle was only $18, but I’ve since upgraded to a nicer one. A half dozen balls is about $15. And really quality shoes can vary on the price.

Are there any good books for beginners?

I’ve never read any books on pickleball, and all my lessons came from playing with others who were familiar with the rules and helped me along.

Are there any online videos you recommend to help beginners?

I’ve heard from others that the best place to find videos is on YouTube. I am sure there are a multitude of videos that describe the rules and strategies for playing the game.

How has your hobby changed your life?

I’ve met so many great people and play weekly in the summer with a group of friends. It’s kept me physically active. It’s also a game that can be played into your 80’s, so when I retire, I will be able to play more frequently.

What advice do you have for others starting out with this hobby?

The game has really increased in popularity, especially in the past couple of years. I would say feel comfortable to ask questions. Everyone I’ve met in the pickleball community has been very kind and helpful! You’ll likely get the hang of it quickly and will meet many new people and develop friendships along the way….I know I have!
